This article is based on a false premise. In the past several decades, more people have risen up out of the middle class into a professional class than have fallen down into poverty. There are more affluent people in America than ever before, both in absolute numbers and as a percentage of the population. Most of this progress is based on education, both the formal kind, and maybe even more important, the informal kind where parents teach their children how to navigate a modern society.
